Biodistribution of graphene oxide nanoparticles. ResearchGate.net

While the graphene substance has many useful properties, concerns have been raised by Health Canada about its presence in at least one type of face mask distributed to schools and day care centres. Several types of masks that contain some form of graphene have appeared. This brings up the question of whether such masks are harmful to the wearer?

Can they release tiny particles of graphene that may be harmful if inhaled?

Cellular Responses to Graphene Oxide Sheets

In this academic-level video, Dr Sandra Vranic (Nanomedicine Lab, Faculty of Medical & Human Sciences & National Graphene Institute, University of Manchester, Manchester (UK)), states that Graphene Oxide in the body produces oxidative stress, inflammation and cytotoxicity (cellular toxicity) which caused a significant percentage of cell death.
